17. Attend a show at an opera house

Rubber barons looking to use the trees from the rainforest to create
an industry/empire attempted to create a small Paris in Manaus. A
reflection of this is the Teatro Amazonia, the opera house of Manaus.
It is gorgeous. I recommend everyone Google search it to check it out.

We went to the philharmonic show there on Thursday night. It was
pretty cool. We sat in a box and everything. As many people who know
me know, I'm not a huge fan of music so was grateful when we left at
intermission. It was still a great experience.

After we went to an outside restaurant in the opera square. (Actually
80% of the restaurants are outdoors) Since everything on the menu is
in Portuguese (and they don't speak English), Jess and I decided to go
against our better judgment and order a random drink. I got something
called the Forca Bruta and she got a Bomba Atomica (seems like pretty
good drinks). Both were grass smoothies. Mine was pretty much pure
grass. Quite gross. We ended up having to just order a capairina
(not sure if that's how it's spelled), which is the local drink that
consists of sugar, limes, and an alcohol special to Brazil (like rum).

I also got iced thanks to Alex (with Skarloff Ice as opposed to
Smirnoff). That was great. In the middle of this open square with
tons of locals (as if we need another reason to stand out). If you
don't know what icing is, just yahoo it.

Fun Fact: So even though people don't speak English many of their T-
shirts are written in English. The funny (or not so funny) T-shirts
that my mom would never let me buy are in all of the H&M/Forever 21-
like stores (called C&A and Marissa). Brandie and I were dying at all
of the awful sayings. One said "Elephant and Friends." What does
that even mean!!??? They buy these shirts but have no idea what they
say. It's crazy. Some of them are even spelled wrong.
